Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to reduce the inrush current and dip in voltage for energy‐ saving purposes in relation to residential air‐conditioning systems.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper focuses on the experimental harmonic investigation of a window‐type residential AC unit line current under time‐based soft‐starting control strategy. The control strategy assumes that only source voltage and current measurements are available. The soft‐starter is based on power electronic devices controlled through a firing signal generated by a programmed microcontroller during the first 500 ms.

Findings

The harmonic content shows the effect of the soft‐starter in exciting high‐frequency components of the line current. Harmonics investigations show that the high frequencies – even or odd multiples – of the fundamental line frequency are all excited by the soft‐starter approach. Some of these frequencies may harm the life cycle of the air‐conditioner.

Research limitations/implications

The real data harmonic analysis shows that the adopted approach excites the entire frequency spectrum of the signal. A better monitoring of the harmonics is required. A closed loop adaptive soft‐starting control may perform much better than a time‐based soft‐starting strategy.

Originality/value

The paper assesses the power quality related to time‐based soft‐starting strategy of a residential air‐conditioning system to reduce the inrush current and the dip in voltage, both with a serious effect on energy savings, especially when the AC load is around 65 per cent of the total power demand load.

Abstract

We investigate whether municipal financial manager turnover is associated with accounting restatements. This analysis is motivated by the notion that suspect financial reporting could limit the ability of stakeholders to assess the use of public resources (GASB, 2006). The evidence suggests that municipalities disclosing accounting restatements are more likely to see changes in the top financial manager position than a control sample of non-restatement municipalities. Overall, our findings are consistent with associations between financial reporting quality and the labor market for municipal financial managers, and imply that governments should consider adding the prevalence of accounting failures as an input in the evaluation of top financial managers.

Abstract

Purpose

Deepfakes are fabricated content created by replacing an original image or video with someone else. Deepfakes have recently become commonplace in politics, posing serious challenges to democratic integrity. The advancement of AI-enabled technology and machine learning has made creating synthetic videos relatively easy. This study explores the role of political brand hate and individual moral consciousness in influencing electorates' intention to share political deepfake content.

Design/methodology/approach

The study creates and uses a fictional deepfake video to test the proposed model. Data are collected from N = 310 respondents in India and tested using partial least square–structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM) with SmartPLS v3.

Findings

The findings support that ideological incompatibility with the political party leads to political brand hate, positively affecting the electorates' intention to share political deepfake videos. This effect is partially mediated by users' reduced intention to verify political deepfake videos. In addition, it is observed that individual moral consciousness positively moderates the effect of political brand hate on the intention to share political deepfake videos. Intention to share political deepfake videos thus becomes a motive to seek revenge on the hated party, an expression of an individual's ideological hate and a means to preserve one's moral self-concept and strengthen their ideologies and moral beliefs.

Originality/value

The study expands the growing discussion about disseminating political deepfake videos using the theoretical lens of the negative consumer-brand relationship. It validates the effect of political brand hate on irrational behavior that is intended to cause harm to the hated party. Further, it provides a novel perspective that individual moral consciousness may fuel the haters' desire to engage in anti-branding behavior. Political ideological incompatibility reflects ethical reasons for brand hate. Therefore, hate among individuals with high moral consciousness serves to preserve their moral self.

Abstract

Purpose

The aim of this paper is to explore the historical development of brands and the development of literature on brand switching to define the antecedents that cause switching behavior among consumers and the impact of switching on market share of companies.

Design/methodology/approach

The historical development of brands is tracked using different secondary sources. Then an intensive literature review is conducted on brand switching at the consumer and business levels. At each level, studies on brand switching are divided into several categories, such as household products, technological products and service providers, and the common factors behind switching for each category and between categories are determined.

Findings

An examination of the historical development of brands shows that brands appeared on products a long time ago and evolved through a number of stages based on the economic and social environment. The literature reveals that no single model can explain brand switching behavior of consumers or businesses across different industries and products. Each study uses a specific set of factors to explain brand switching. However, brand attractiveness can be counted as the most common factor behind brand switching.

Research limitations/implications

There is little understanding of the historical mutations of brand switching behavior and the influence of mutation on branding strategies. The study suggests that continuous exploration of consumer’s preferences is needed to create and sustain attractive brands.

Practical implications

Managers increasingly recognize brands as one of the most valuable assets of an organization, and, therefore, an informed knowledge of the factors underpinning brand switching may help managers build attractive brands and prevent brand switching. This condition imposes significant challenges in a highly innovative environment, where technological changes can quickly make attractive brands obsolete.

Originality/value

This paper highlights that the factors behind brand switching should be monitored constantly, even for the same brand, to define an appropriate strategy that helps sustain brand attractiveness.

Abstract

Purpose

Driven by the Sustainable Development Goals (goals 7, 8, 12 and 13), this study investigates the moderating role of financial development in the link between energy poverty and a sustainable environment in African nations.

Design/methodology/approach

Panel cointegration analysis, fully modified least squares, Driscoll and Kraay least squares and method of moments quantile regression were used as estimation techniques to examine the link between financial development, energy poverty and sustainable environment for 28 African nations. Energy poverty is measured using two proxies-access to clean energy and access to electricity, while the environment is gauged using ecological footprint.

Findings

The regression outcomes show that access to clean energy and electricity negatively impacts the ecological footprint across all the quantiles; hence, energy poverty increases environmental degradation. Financial development positively influences environmental degradation in the region at the upper quantiles. Similarly, the interactive term of energy poverty and financial development has a significant positive impact on ecological footprint; thus, the financial sector adds to energy poverty and environmental degradation. The results of other variables hint that per capita income and institutions worsen environmental quality while urbanisation strengthens the environment.

Originality/value

This study offers fresh insights into the moderating effect of financial development in the link between energy poverty and sustainable environment in African countries.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to develop comprehensive risk management tool, Intelligent Risk Mapping and Assessment System (IRMAS™) with a contingency for multi‐site, multi‐partner concurrent engineering projects with the aim of achieving above‐mentioned paradigms. Its unique knowledge warehouse enables the use of organisational knowledge, lessons learnt, captured as well as best practices to minimise risks in project management.

Design/methodology/approach

IRMAS is designed to identify, prioritise, analyse and assist project managers to manage perceived sources of concurrent engineering risks. Several knowledge elicitation techniques were used to compile the knowledge used for the intelligent system developed. The core of the research is the reasoning methodology that not only supports the decision‐making process of the user, but also aids the knowledge retrieving, storing, sharing and updating process of manufacturing organisations.

Findings

A total of 589 risk items were identified for different project types, as well as information on 4,372 risk items and 136 lessons learnt were gathered. IRMAS is a proactive tool supporting project management activities. It is designed as a web‐based portal compiled in Java facilitating effective and a common communication platform between project partners.

Research limitations/implications

Identification of risks during the complete product design, development and delivery process in a concurrent engineering environment is challenging. It covers the “product value stream” including partners, suppliers, research and development, design and manufacturing, marketing, purchasing, service and support personnel and customers. Within the context of concurrent engineering, the design style must be “Design WITH” approach where collaborative negotiation requires communication, consideration and collaboration. The full validation of IRMAS™ is successfully carried out in two large‐scale new product development projects. It has already been decided to be deployed by a large international aerospace company and is successfully commercialized.

Originality/value

The originality of the paper lies in its uniqueness in these areas: IRMAS provides a systematic engineering approach to risk management of concurrent product and process development based on risk management standards and Project Management Body of Knowledge, to leverage of success factors in manufacturing; concurrencies and relationships between several activities throughout product's life cycle are captured and mapped; the inheritance of risk between several phases are modelled and quantified; the wealth of knowledge stored in the knowledge repository and IRMAS's capability to reuse them for later elicitation in the system's knowledge base; and user‐interactive, unique dynamic risk management software package which will be available in the commercial market.

Abstract

Purpose

Patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) suffer many physical disabilities which cause many problems in their life. These patients really need to have continuity of care based on cooperation between patient, the family and their care givers in order to achieve an integration of care. The purpose of this paper is to assess the impact of continuous care on quality of life of patients with COPD.

Design/methodology/approach

A before–after quasi-experimental study was carried out with 72 patients with COPD at Beheshti educational hospital of Hamadan University of Medical Sciences. The patients who met inclusion criteria were randomly allocated into an intervention group (n=36) and a control group (n=36). The patients completed the St George’s Respiratory Questionnaire before and after their care. The intervention comprised continuous care with orientation and sensitization sessions (2 weeks), control and evaluation sessions (45 days) for intervention group and with routine care in the control group. Data were analyzed with SPSS, descriptive and inferential statistics were conducted to measure differences between intervention and control group.

Findings

Continuity of care improved significantly the quality of life of COPD patients in general, and in the symptoms, activity and impact domains (P=0.001). In contrast, routine care did not improve quality of life for patients in general, and in the symptoms, activity and impact domains (P=0.05).

Originality/value

Continuity of care has a positive impact on quality of life for COPD patients. Health care system should utilize continuity of care models as an overall plan for patients with COPD. Moreover, managers of health care system could reduce burden of chronic diseases by employing continuity of care models in planning patient care.

Abstract

Purpose

The study aims to assess how corporate branding affects firm performance in the context of the Oman hotel industry, listed on the Muscat Stock Exchange (MSX).

Design/methodology/approach

This study approach was made by way of a mixed method. First, it examines qualitative and exploratory information collected from companies’ internet sites, audited annual reports (the financial year 2019) published in MSX, web searches and websites of companies and travel agencies from all the eight listed hotel companies in the MSX to examine the impact of corporate branding on firm performance proxied by return of assets (ROA) and return of equity (ROE) and secondly, it assesses the measurement and structural models by applying partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM).

Findings

The findings recommend that well-thought-out web marketing on corporate branding by hotel companies leads to firm performance. The findings indicate that corporate branding on travel agency websites and a company’s own website can help businesses become more profitable. In addition, there is a synergistic connection on corporate branding of the hotel industry, including the presentation of a novel hotel narrative, the conception of a cornerstone loyalty program, the demonstration of excellence in hospitality and service, information on timely amenities like Covid-19 safety measures and the use of technology and experiential elements through platforms like the company website or the website of the travel agent all essential to achieve firm financial performance. As per the importance–performance matrix map, websites of travel agents (agoda.com, booking.com and hotels.com) had the importance (agoda.com 0.616, booking.com 0.959 and hotels.com 1.036) to impact companies’ corporate branding and firm performance, whereas Google search shows a value of −1.954, which has no impact on companies’ corporate branding.

Research limitations/implications

The study considered only one hotel/tourism industry to know the effect of corporate branding on firm performance. Further studies may be chosen on other industries needed to allow for generalization.

Practical implications

This study aims to provide insights into how the hotel industry can make use of corporate branding through the company website, Google sites and websites of companies’ travel agency by providing timely updated promotion, facilities, quality services and hygiene matters to enhance firm performance.

Originality/value

This study provides empirical evidence to find various factors of corporate branding of the hotel industry’s firm performance. In addition, the study offers valuable insight into the nonmonetary measures of achievements.

Abstract

Purpose

The present study focused on examining the effect of treated wastewater (TWW) on soil chemical properties. Also, efforts were made to compare the soil chemical properties under TWW irrigation with that under groundwater (GW).

Design/methodology/approach

During the years 2021 and 2022, surface and subsurface soil samples were randomly collected in triplicate by using an auger fortnightly at two depths (20 and 40 cm) from the selected spot areas to represent the different types of irrigation water sources: TWW and GW. Samples of the GW and the TWW were collected for analysis.

Findings

This study examines the impact of TWW on soil characteristics and the surrounding environment. TWW use enhances soil organic matter, nutrient availability and salt redistribution, while reducing calcium carbonate accumulation in the topsoil. However, it negatively affects soil pH, electrical conductivity and sodium adsorption ratio, although remaining within acceptable limits. Generally, irrigating with TWW improves most soil chemical properties compared to GW.

Originality/value

In general, almost all of the soil’s chemical properties were improved by irrigating with TWW rather than GW. Following that, wastewater is used to irrigate the soil. Additionally, the application of gypsum to control the K/Na and Ca/Na ratios should be considered under long-term TWW and GW usage in this study area in order to control the salt accumulation as well as prevent soil conversion to saline-sodic soil in the future. However, more research is needed to thoroughly investigate the long-term effects of using TWW on soil properties as well as heavy metal accumulation in soil.

Abstract

Purpose

The purpose of this paper is to estimate that the start-up current parameters are stochastic or not. Electronic equipment in luminaries significantly improves their luminous efficiency, thereby increasing the energy efficiency of lighting installations. However, the use of electronics [e.g. electronic ballasts for discharge lamps or power supply units for light-emitting diode (LED) luminaries] may also cause some negative effects in lighting installations. One of such effects is large inrush current, which can greatly exceed the admissible line load and trigger the overcurrent protective devices.

Design/methodology/approach

The paper presents results of laboratory tests together with their statistical analysis of the inrush currents of lighting luminaires. Three road luminaires build in different technologies of similar power have been selected for the study. The theoretical distributions described by the analytical formulas matched the empirical distributions by using the MATLAB’ Statistical Toolbox.

Findings

As parameters that characterize short-time overcurrent at start-up are the maximum value of overcurrent amplitude in start-up moment (IPIC), the duration of overcurrent in start-up moment (tPIC) and melting integral MI. The aim of this statistical analysis of the selected parameter is to provide an overcurrent mathematical description allowing to estimate the probability of occurrence of values. For lighting luminaire fitted with magnetic ballasts, the parameters analyzed will randomly vary with the moment of power on. For electronic ballasts, the occurrence of this phenomenon depends on the adopted construction solution.

Practical implications

This will allow, for example, to estimate the probability of activation of protection device by comparing the value of the inrush current Joule’s integral MI with its value for the analyzed protection device. The proposed method may be useful for checking the selectivity of the protection devices in the lighting system.

Originality/value

The study enables application of a probabilistic model for analysis of inrush currents of lighting luminaire and predicting the possible consequences of their occurrence.
